About the Data
Urban and Rural Population

The 1990 U.S. Census counts separating total resident population into urban and rural components was the source of data used. The Census defines " urban" generally as places of 2,500 or more inhabitants.

TRAC compiled the Census county level data into federal district units and then calculated relevant percents and rankings to facilitate their comparison to other states, federal districts, and counties in the country.
