The information on federal district court judges is the fruit of a decade long research project conducted by
the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. Work is ongoing to expand the current coverage.
A wide variety of original sources is being used in this research. Sources include data from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the Federal Judicial Center, PACER, the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the Department of Justice, the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, individual United States Attorney Offices, main Department of Justice Divisions, and the National Archives.
Coverage of federal district court judges, while extensive, is not complete. For many districts, criminal case coverage goes back to fiscal year 1986, and for civil cases, back to fiscal year 1992. For some districts, however, earlier years are either not yet available or only provide partial coverage. Districts also varied in how district court cases assigned to magistrate judges are tracked. As a result these cases may not be reflected in TRAC's current on-line system.
