Number of Federal Employees. Number of employees on the federal civilian payroll, regardless of their work status -- fulltime, parttime, intermittent, seasonal, etc. No data are reported for members or employees of Congress, Architect of the Capitol, Botanic Garden, General Accounting Office, Library of Congress, Congressional Budget Office, Office of Compliance, Judicial Branch, White House Office, Office of the Vice President, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S. Postal Service, Postal Rate Commission, National Imagery and Mapping Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, Public Health Service's Commissioned Corps, and foreign nationals employed oversees.

Number of Fulltime Employees. Number of federal employees recorded with a fulltime status. Does not count those who work fulltime only seasonally.

Number of Supervisors. Number of fulltime federal employees recorded as supervisors or managers. Does not include those classified as a group "leader."

Number of Criminal Investigators. Number of fulltime employees holding specific occupations which have been classified by the General Accounting Office as a "criminal investigator" because of their authority and legal status. This GAO classification includes the following specific oc cupational series: 0025-Park Ranger, 0083-Police, 1801-General Inspection, Investigating and Compliance, 1802-Compliance Inspection and Support, 1811-Criminal Investigating, 1812-Game Law Enforcement, 1816-Immigration Investigating, 1884-Customs Patrol O fficers, 1896-Border Patrol Agents. Note that the Office of Personnel Management classifies these occupational series under different headings, and in the case of occupational series 1802, the lower grades are classified by OPM as "clerical."

Average Salary. This field was computed by TRAC  by taking the total salary payments divided by the number with an annual recorded salary. Personnel with only an hourly pay rate recorded are not included. Note that this reflects salary paid and does not include personnel costs for benefits and other nonsalary items.

Percent Fulltime. Percent of employees with a fulltime status. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing fulltime employees by total federal employees.

Percent Supervisors. Percent of fulltime employees who are supervisors or managers. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing fulltime supervisory employees by all fulltime employees.

Percent Criminal Investigators. Percent of fulltime employees who are classified by GAO as fulltime criminal investigators. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing fulltime criminal investigaors by all fulltime employees.

Rate: Employees per 100,000 Population. The number of federal employees per 100 thousand population. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing the number of federal employees by population (in 100 thousands).

Rate: Fulltime Employees per 100,000 Population. The number of fulltime federal employees per 100 thousand population. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing the number of fulltime federal employees by population (in 100 thousands).

Rate: Supervisors per 100,000 Population. The number of federal employees per 100 thousand population. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing the number of fulltime supervisors and managers by population (in 100 thousands).

Rate: Criminal Investigators per 100,000 Population. The number of fulltime criminal investigatgors as classified by GAO per 100 thousand population. This field was computed by TRAC  by dividing the number of fulltime criminal investigators by population (in 100 thousands).

Ranks - various. Ranks are available for states and federal districts (within the U.S.) and for counties (within each state). A rank of "1" indicates the highest value, while larger ranks indicate lower values. In the case of ties, the smallest numerical rank is assigned.

Percentile Ranks - various. Percentile ranks are available for counties. Counties in the U.S. in the top 1 percent are assigned a percentile rank of 1, those in the second percent are assigned a percentile rank of 2, and so forth.
